5Very useful, with lots of colour.

Sub-titled War at Sea 1756 - 1815, this book of A4 size, covers both the Seven Years war and the Napoleonic wars, when the Royal Navy had to cover the globe, both in furtherance of the war with France, and its possessions. These it took from France over the period of the war, adding to the British Empire, and in the protection of our world wide trade. The first chapters of the book cover an introduction the the Navy, and include short descriptions of the way that the ships were run and worked. From Chapter 4 the work of the navy is discussed, moving through the American War of Independence, Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic period, and finally the War of 1812. A major part of the book are some 50 side views, in full colour,of warships of all the nations involved, most of these cover most of two pages of the book, across the spine; most of the rest of the books prints are also in full colour. There is a three page index, and a total of 239 pages. It is a very interesting book and should find a ready home on the bookshelf of anybody with an interest in the period covered by the book.

2Pretty pictures, shame about the text

Anyone who reads newspapers regularly will know that proof-reading is a dying art, but I have never before encountered as many glaring copy errors in a supposedly quality volume as I did in "Naval Warfare In The Age Of Sail". Amongst the many errors I found in a partial reading were spritsails described as spiritsails, and cutaway drawings in which the key numbers don't match those on the accompanying graphic (USS Essex p.223).Quite apart from the sloppy compilation, the book leaves a bit to be desired on the readability front, and is clearly designed for coffee table use rather than for serious reading. That's fine if you maintain a coffee table approach throughout, but the section seeking to explain 18th / 19th century naval technology and terminology seemed to me to presume a greater level of prior knowledge than most casual readers would possess, whilst leaving many arcane naval terms unexplained.A pretty ordinary effort on the whole.

5A few minor errors, but an excellent book nonetheless.

Although Messieurs. Ireland and Gibbons are my favourite author/illustrator combination, I must agree that there are some errors in this book, most obviously the slightly dubious colour schemes of some vessels (e.g. Santissima Trinidad, p.174) However, the illustrations are superb, and really bring the text, and this period of history, to life. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this period of naval history.
