"Lincoln is distinguished from every other president, with the exception of Jefferson, in that we can be certain that he wrote every word to which his name is attached." Fred Kaplan takes a chronological walk through Lincoln's writing and the books he read which likely influenced it. His language influences are varied, ranging from the formal writing of Shakespeare and the Bible to the spoken rhythms of revival preaching and off-color jokes.The focus on influencial reading is made possible by the limited number of books available to Lincoln's family during his childhood. It is possible to list virtually every early book he read and find its influence in his subsequent reading choices and writing style. This approach becomes increasingly speculative as the analysis progresses into Lincoln's adulthood and political career. The author does responsibly label his assumptions, inferences, and speculations about Lincoln's reading. But there is little certainty beyond the early childhood chapters.The book is engaging and explores a side of Lincoln not treated in depth elsewhere. The speculation can be forgiven because it is fascinating and at least potentially accurate. Kaplan's book is a helpful supplement to other specialized treatments of our 16th president, such as his leadership style (Lincoln On Leadership), emotional challenges (Lincoln's Melancholy), and religious commitment (Abraham Lincoln, a Man of Faith and Courage). It is worth a cautious reading.
