not just for 7+

I am a ten year old girl. The books I'm into are the Harry Potter series and Jacqueline Wilson's books. So I did wonder why my mum thought I would like this book with its big writing and lots of pictures it looked a bit young for me. But I really enjoyed the story, the Tollins remind me of Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men. They are very curious about everything and do daft things. So if you're looking for a book to read for a journey, a story that will make you laugh, then try this.

An enjoyable read

Holly, aged 8 really enjoyed the book. She especially liked the character of Sparkler. She found it an easy read and liked the format of the book being three short stories which. although linked, could be read as stand-alone stories. She enjoyed the illustrations, too. She only scored it 4 stars as she found the last story, "Windbags and Dark Tollins" less exciting than the first two.Although aged at 7+ it is well written and introduces children into a more 'adult' type of descriptive prose. One example being, "An elderly heron stood on the edge of Darvell's Pond, watching the water as if it contained the secret of life itself." There are plenty of examples sprinkled throughout the book. Although apparently aimed at boys it can clearly be enjoyed by girls, too.I could certainly see the Tollins getting an avid band of followers if Iggulden writes more books based on them.

Short, but fun

OK, it's not going to win a literary prize, but if you want a humorous fairy-inspired book for boys, this will do nicely. With fireworks, capture, escape, a little dash of romance, and a few squashed fairies, this has all it needs to keep the little ones amused.OK, so there's no character development - it's a short book. And yes, it's silly. But that's kind of the point. You don't need to pay much attention, as most of the entertainment is less about the plot and more about the slapstick violence that explode or drench the Tollins. For all that it's listed as 3 books, they're so short that they're really more chapters.My kids enjoyed being read this, and I'm sure yours will too. An adult reading it to them may be amused, too.
