There has been a large gap in time between the last book in the series of Emporor and this book approx 8 years. You dont have to worry over remembering the plots and what has happened previously as this book starts off with the assasination of Julius Ceasar and so all bets are off and there is the scrabble for positions and power. The story is well told and carries at a decent pace, I dont know if it is totally accurate on dates and precise cirumstances, but I dont care, its a great read and you get the overall picture of what happened to the Roman Empire once Julius Ceasar died.A great read

I don't read this sort of book as a history primer - I don't expect it to be spot-on in facts and timing. What I do look for is an entertaining read, plus a feel for the times the book is staged in, plus, a feel for the general flow of the historical events. This book provides that in spades. While I have read the rest of this series, I've never really thought about the events following Caesar's death, until Graves' "I, Claudius" kicks in. This book is a very good book indeed and bridges that span well.Quite an eye-opener describing a load of historical characters I know the names of, but have not been able to link, even if loosely, before.Well recommended. I couldn't put it down.

Having read some earlier reviews I was a bit apprehensive about buying this. And I wad right to be. It seemed more like a stand alone than the conclusion of what had been a very good series. The major characters had changed radically from the earlier books, especially Octavian who, having fought in Gaul with Caesar for ten years was now only about 18 years old. Some playing with history I can understand - this is after all a novel and not a history book - but that is going too far. It is a pity that Iggulden felt the need to write this final book because it spoils the earlier ones for me. And there was way too much Cleopatra for my liking. Final gripe - why the need for this particular ending? A great disappointment I'm afraid.
