5Super!!!
By hypnobear
I first read this book as a schoolgirl in the 70s - I'm now re-reading it with fresh eyes, and boy, what a good read it is! When I first read it, I enjoyed the humour, but didn't get the apt hos quite as much. Now, with many years' nursing behind me, as well as a couple of serious illnesses myself, I can only marvel at how Betty MacDonald could turn such a horrible experience into such a wonderful book. Her account of being a patient in a sanatorium for patients who could not afford treatment is funny, tender and heartbreaking at the same time. It's a lovely book, and I highly recommend it (and then get down on your knees and thank God we don't have TB - or sanatoria -like that any more!).

5One womans humorous fight against T.B.
By A customer
Betty Macdonald, fought and won her battle against T.B. with help from her wonderfuly scaty and loving family, her sister Mary who is married to a doctor and thinks that makes her a doctor too. Betty's mother who wonders through life in a calm haze (sometimes you think as a defence against the rest of the family. And a Gran called gramy who is convinced that T.B. is the result of eating too many eggs and not eating her horrible porridge. There are also the other patients at the hospital, who are described by Betty in wonderful detail, especialy Kim who you just fall in love with, she has an acid wit and a kind heart. This is a true story not to be missed.

5The Plague and I
By A customer
The Plague and I is a first hand description of the effects of chronic, severe illness (TB) and being institutionalised. It describes a world (hopefully) gone for ever in vivid detail. It is also so funny that I have hurt myself laughing. This book is fabulous - everyone working with patients should read it.
