Amazing Applications and Perfect Programs

This is one of a series of books– ‘Get Ahead in Computing’- which cover The Science of Computers, Computer Networks, Awesome Algorithms and Creative Coding and this book, Amazing Applications and Perfect Programs. It is a large, colourful paperback with 32 page and is designed for children in KS2 (approx 7 -11).I found this book to be very well written and designed to be understandable for children and interesting to read. Computers are everywhere now – at work, home and school. However, most of us have no idea how they work and how they have developed and keep developing. This book aims to help readers learn to use the power of programs and operating systems – such as Windows, files, folders, words and pictures, sounds and music. From apps to gaming, to saving work and designing posters, this is a very interesting and engaging read, well pitched for this age group.

Up to date and handy as support for the computing curriculum

I think this is pitched perfectly for year 6 or 7 students - I teach computing at this level and the information and way it is expressed is in line with the curriculum at this age. There are activities, a glossary and quizzes and the book takes you through what applications and programs are with hints on how to organise files and an explanation about what various types of applications (spreadsheets, word processor are used for. Everything is well illustrated and the pages are not too "busy".This is more suited for library use than for the home in my opinion. It's quite comprehensive on this topic, albeit a short book and it complements the other books in the series well. I would recommend.

I intended this book for my 8 year old granddaughter but she finds the content far below her capabilities as she, in common with lots of other youngsters I imagine, found the information far too basic. I am not sure of the intended age but kids nowadays are picking up tablets and downloading games and apps such as Snapchat from a very early age and have far outpaced the information in this book.The author really needs to swat up on his facts as in one part he claims that a video file containing a movie may be up to 800GB in size which is larger than a lot of hard drives. This would have to be a pretty big movie as single sided dual layer DVDs, which easily contain a movies file, are around 8GB. Most of my movies recorded on computer using a TV card in MP4 format are around 1GB for a 2 hour film.The “book” is not really a book at approx 30 pages and the cover price of £8.99 cannot, in my opinion, be justified.Shallow and short.
